young living plant-based insect repellent

A few years ago, Young Living released a brand new product that I snatched up real quick: 100% plant-based formula, EPA approved, Insect Repellent!! I couldn’t wait to test it out!

What’s Really In It?

Made with a pure sesame oil base, this repellent has a golden tint that can stain clothes, so be careful when applying. Make sure to use a small amount and rub it completely into your skin to avoid staining.

I found it absorbed quickly and smoothly, and doesn’t feel sticky or greasy like many conventional types. Don’t you just hate when you spray repellent on and feel like you need to shower to get it all off you? Yuck!

I’m impressed that it’s DEET free, with no parabens, petrochemicals, animal-derived ingredients, synthetic preservatives, synthetic fragrances or synthetic colorants. It’s super safe for everyone, including children (with adult supervision for application).

It includes all the essential oils traditionally recommended for their bug-repellent properties: Citronella, Lemongrass, Rosemary, Geranium, Spearmint, Thyme and Clove, and the aroma is a light citrus smell that’s actually pleasant! The final ingredient is 1% Vitamin E, a natural plant-based preservative. That’s it. No junk, no nasty chemicals. It’s also hypoallergenic and dermatologist tested.

I’m absolutely in love with this and so thankful to have an insect repellent the whole family can use without fear!

Application Tips

I use Young Living’s Insect Repellent on myself and our preschool daughter. My favorite way to make it simple is to put a small amount into a 1 or 2 oz plastic spray bottle to keep in my purse.

I’ll spray a little into my cupped hand (to prevent the oil from squirting everywhere) and then use my hand to rub the oil on our arms, neck, face, etc. This prevents wasting any repellent and reduces the chance of staining clothing.

There is no need to dilute it as it’s already perfectly formulated to be effective. Some people prefer to put a little into a roller ball and apply that way, but I found it to be quite tedious and prefer to spray a nickel-size amount into my palm.

Is it Effective?

Yes! I slather my daughter and I with this insect repellent before going outside because we are having a horrible wet season and there are bugs everywhere. If I go out without it, I will almost certainly get bitten, but when wearing this repellent, neither of us have experienced bites!

Let’s Chat About Price

Is it pricey? You bet! It’s the best quality product you can find made with the most pure, powerful oils in the world. This bottle is filled with essential oils, so you’re not buying a $5 bottle of synthetic chemicals duplicated in a lab! This is nature’s purity and trust me, the price tag is worth it!

Also, keep in mind that a bottle lasts a long time. The shelf life is said to be up to about 3 years, and my bottle is going strong after 2! If you use just a nickel to quarter size amount, it will last you far longer than other kinds. Think investment in health vs. cheap convenience!

  1. I love the insect repellent, but the bottle leaks and is a greasy mess. Any thoughts on putting it in a spray bottle? Would you dilute it?

    1. Hi Jennifer! I’m so glad you like the insect repellent. So sorry to hear that your bottle has leaked. I haven’t had that problem, so I don’t have a solid solution for you. I do know that Young Living warned about putting a spray on it because the sesame oil can stain clothing and spray is more likely to get all over the place. However, I would say if that isn’t a big concern, you could definitely go ahead and try that. I probably would not dilute it further as that would likely reduce it’s effectiveness. Maybe transfer some to a smaller travel size bottle for use?

      1. Well, I poured this insect repellent into young living thieves spray (empty bottle) and bring along whenever I am out.

    1. Hi Candice! I have been very impressed with it actually. I use it on myself and my daughter and we both have not gotten bites after applying. We’re having a bad Mosquito spring this year and I’ve been bitten when not wearing it, but not with it, so I call that a win!
